A 10-year-old Chinese girl swam in a river for three hours with her hands and feet tied in an "endurance" test set by her parent.
Huang Li, from central China's Hunan province, swam bound in a tributary of the Yangtze River for three kilometers under her parents' supervision, prompting anger among bystanders, Xinhua news agency said.
The girl's father, a teacher, insisted this would help improve her swimming skills and would one day help fulfill her dream to swim across the English Channel in record time, other reports said.
The father, who has been coaching the girl since she was five, said his daughter was a swimming prodigy.
However, people who witnessed the incident accused the parents of abusing and exploiting the girl for their own ambition.(AFP-Naharnet)(AP photo shows Ten-year-old Huang Li, with her hands and feet bound, is carried out of the water by her father, Huang Daosheng along the Xiang river, in Changsha, in southern China's Hunan province) |
