NEW DELHI, October 2: India warmed up well for their World Cup qualifier against Lebanon, scoring a 2-1 win over club side Al Nasr in Dubai on Monday. Yet, injuries to key players during the friendly must have left left the Indians worried ahead of the Beirut match to be played on October 8.
Down by a goal after Al Nasr’s Mohammed Khamees scored in the 12th minute, Bob Houghton’s boys came back strongly in the match where the Indian coach experimented with all his players, inlcuding the reserves.
India’s latest football star NP Pradeep struck the equaliser with a header in the 38th minute after the Kerala player met with a well-measured Steven Dias cross to keep hopes alive. But after the equaliser, surprisingly both the teams got engaged in rough tackling which led to injuries to midfielder Climax Lawrence and defender Mahesh Gawli.
Climax and Gawli were replaced by Mehrajuddin Wadoo and Samir Naik.
To add to India’s injury woes, Abhisek Yadav joined the list after the break when the Mahindra United striker had a clash of heads and was stretchered off to the hospital. Even goalkeeper Sandip Nandy suffered a hamstring pull and had to be replaced with Subhasish Roy Chowdhury in the closing stages of the match.
However, the Indians managed a hard-fought victory after Manjit Singh, who replaced Yadav, scored the winner in the 58th minute following a through pass from Clifford Miranda.
While India made a gradual improvement to jump to six places in the FIFA ranking to be at 145, Lebanon are currently one place ahead of India. |
