Marcel Khalife (b. 1950, Amchit, Mount Lebanon) is a Lebanese composer, singer and oud (an Arabic lute) player. His work combines traditional Arabic music with Western elements like the piano. He composed and sang the poetry of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. Songs such as "Ummi" (my mother) and "Jawaz el-saffar" (the passport) were a huge success all over the Arab world.
Khalife has performed in many prestigous halls as the "Palace of Arts" in Montreal, "Symphony Space" and "Merkin Concert" in New York, "Berklee Theatre" and "New England Conservatory" in Boston, "Royal Festival Hall", and "Queen Elizabeth Hall" in London,"UNESCO Palace" of Beirut, Cairo Opera House (Egypt). During the year 2003 he was faced with a lawsuit in Lebanon for using a Koranic verse in one of his songs. The charge against him related to the song "Oh Father, I am Yusuf", based on a poem by the acclaimed Palestinian poet and writer Mahmoud Darwish. The song, from the album Arabic Coffeepot, released in 1995, was inspired by the story of Yusuf (Joseph) and his brothers, which quotes a verse from the Koran. The court found him innocent of the charge of degrading Islam. In 2005, Khalife was named UNESCO Artist for peace. |
