Stephan Eicher (Born 17 August 1960 in Münchenbuchsee near Berne, Switzerland ) is a Swiss singer.

His songs are sung in a variety of languages i.e.French, German, English, Italian and Swiss-German, sometimes using different languages in the same piece.

His success started in German-speaking countries into the 1980s with the single Eisbär, afterwards success spread Europe wide with various albums, tours and chart success in France and Switzerland.

Life

He was born in the rural municipality of Münchenbuchsee not far from Berne.

His musical training was gained at the academy of art in Zurich, where he and others also learned to use the computer for composing.

Stephan Eicher released his first single Eisbär together with his brother Martin on the album Grauzone in 1980. He became interested in French songs by Jacques Dutronc, Georges Brassens and Serge Gainsbourg which resulted in the album Les Chansons Bleues. This album is also widely inspired by the american singers listened during all his youth : Patty Smith, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan...

His two following albums began to establish his reputation. The album "I tell this night" '(and the title "Two people in a room" released in 1985 into the Swiss Charts at number 10 and stayed 12 weeks. Two years later the album "Silence" reached number 3 and was in the Swiss Top 10 for 14 weeks. Both albums were created by Stephan Eicher almost single-handedly.

With 1989's "My Place" Stephan Eicher went in a different direction. The French texts were written by the friend and author Philippe Djian. His largest commercial success came in 1991 the album "Engelberg", spending 5 weeks at Number 1 n Switzerland and 46 weeks in the charts in total. The song "Dejeuner En Paix" was also in a Number 1 in France. With all his following albums Stephan Eicher regularly reached the top 5 in the Swiss album Charts.

Following a world tour, which included concerts on the African continent, he produced his first live album in 1994.

Since 1989 song texts were written again and again by the French author Philippe Djian.

In 2001, Stephan Eicher its first Best OF album with the title "Hotel*S". The hotel Hess in the Swiss angel mountain was for it long years second at home. Martin Hess, son of the Hotelierehepaars, at the same time his close friend and producer. In the hotel the albums "Engelberg" and "Louanges" developed. Eicher selected the title "Hotel*S" as hommage to this Grand hotel, which was torn off in the same year. On the title selection to the album he let the fans co-ordinate with the official homepage.

He always already loved it to convert "failed ideas" into strong projects last "in the taxi from Hamburg to Palermo, a musical journey by the cultures" 2003, which he carried out literally and as album.
