Members of Sydney's Lebanese community gathered in Sydney for a public memorial for those who died in the month-long conflict in Lebanon earlier this year. Thousands of Australians were evacuated from Lebanon in the first weeks of the Israeli military offensive, and hundreds more living in Australia lost family and friends during the hostilities. Friends of Lebanon Australia chairman Hassan Haj says he has been humbled by the support today's memorial has received. "I'm getting a lot of messages [from] people with whom the Lebanese are perceived to have been in conflict," he said. "Like I've got messages of condolence from Cronulla lifeguards association, many people I know from the Jewish community ... which is great and touching, you know." Salwa Haidar lost her mother to an Israeli air strike during the month-long conflict. "My mum didn't deserve to die this way, I would never imagine she would die this way," she said. "We're still in shock 'til now and we have to live with this memory for the rest of our lives." |
