BEIRUT - Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri, a key Shia ally of Hezbollah, was due in Saudi Arabia on Saturday to seek the Sunni-led kingdom’s help in reducing growing sectarian tensions.
Berri, whose Amal movement fought alongide Hezbollah in its summer war with Israel, was due to meet King Abdullah during his 48-hour visit, his spokesman said.‘Saudi Arabia’s influence puts it in a position where it can help us improve relations between Muslims inside Lebanon and between Lebanon and Syria,’ Berri said in an interview with the Al Mostaqbal daily. An Arab diplomat said the visit would also be an opportunity to improve relations between Hezbollah and Saudi Arabia which deteriorated during the month-long conflict in July and August.Saudi official media angered the Shia militant group by describing as ‘adventurist’ the deadly cross-border raid in which it seized two Israeli soldiers drawing the devastating onslaught on Lebanon’s infrastructure. The Syrian-backed Hezbollah has two ministers in the government of Prime Minister Fuad Siniora but the cabinet is dominated by the anti-Syrian alliance led by the premier, which has the backing of pro-Western states like Saudi Arabia.Since the conflict with Israel, Hezbollah has been calling for the formation of a government of national unity, including the Christian faction of Michel Aoun, currently in opposition, which has demanded that Siniora step down. |
