In the seventies and eighties Egyptian actor Nour El Sharif’s name always preceded that of comedian actor Adel Imam.  Today, things are changing; in the new film “Amarit Ya’koubain” (Ya’qoubain’s Building), Adel’s name appears before Nour’s.

According to the London based weekly, Laha, Nour admitted that now Adel is considered to be more popular and received a higher salary for his role in the film. Nour stated this does not bother him, and if it did he would not have accepted to star in the film alongside Adel.

The administration of the 56th International Berlin Film Festival notified the production company of the Egyptian film “Amarit Ya’koubain” of its official decision to screen the film in the ‘panorama section’ of the festival along with 20 other films from around the world.

Its appearance at the festival is the first international screening of the film, which is scheduled to be released in Egyptian cinema houses this summer.

The Berlin festival took place in mid-February.

The real life tenants of the building Amarit Ya’koubain refused to allow the cast of the new film, named after the popular building, to shoot any of the scenes inside the building. The tenants even ordered the doorman to refuse any of the cast entrance to the premises.

The tenants claim the film is in an insult to them, portraying them as indecent people. The cast of the film has denied that the film insults them in any way, stating that the film features different aspects of social life that exists everywhere.

Scenarist Waheed Hamid garnered some of the most prominent names of the Egyptian cinema for the film, based on the novel by Dr. Alaa’ Al Aswani. The list of actors includes Summaya Al Khashab, Laila Elwi, Hind Sabri, Ahmad Rateb, and Ahmad Budair.

Few Egyptian films have been featured in the festival, the most notable being “Alexandria Why” by prominent director Yousif Shahin in 1979.
