So Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is dominating this morning's entertainment headlines, and rightfully so: As Joshua Rich's weekly box office wrapup points out, it ''opened much, much stronger than any movie ever has,'' to the tune of $132 million.
Given the buzz surrounding Pirates the last couple weeks, I don't think anyone is particularly surprised by its whopping numbers, but I have to admit, back in early May, when EW.com ran a poll asking ''Which summer movie will be the biggest box office hit?'' I was sure Superman Returns would come out on top. Good thing you mateys are savvier than me: Pirates scored a slight win in that poll over The Da Vinci Code (35% vs. 34%), with Superman Returns (16%) in third, X-Men: The Last Stand (11%) in fourth, and Cars (4%) in fifth. Now, it's your turn to 'fess up (or boast): Back in the days when Paris Bennett still had Idol dreams, when Ana Lucia was alive and kicking on Lost, and Nelly Furtado was just that chick who sang ''I'm Like a Bird,'' did you envision Pirates having the best opening day, best opening weekend, and shortest time to $100 million...of all time? |
