England's World Cup defeat to Portugal was watched in 19 million UK homes, according to overnight TV ratings. The BBC said an average of 16.2 million households tuned in, rising to a peak of 19 million. Many more watched in pubs, on big screens and the internet. But the penalty shoot-out drama did not match the ratings for England's group game against Sweden on 20 June, which peaked at 19.9 million. It was almost five million down on England's exit from Euro 2004. When England lost on penalties to Portugal in Euro 2004, a peak of 23.9 million homes tuned into the BBC's coverage. A corporation spokeswoman said Saturday was "a good day for BBC Sport". A further 3.9 million households tuned into BBC Two to watch Andy Murray's victory over Andy Roddick at Wimbledon, part of which clashed with the England match, she added.
