The Lebanese Democratic party on Thursday vowed to exert relentless efforts to safeguard national unity in response to the assassination of its official Saleh Aridi.

The party made the stand in a statement adopted by its central council that held an extraordinary meeting under its leader Talal Arslan.

The statement urged premier Fouad Saniora's cabinet to refer the Aridi crime to the Judicial council, the court that handles attacks on state security.

The statement called for observing a day of national mourning in Mount Lebanon to coincide with the Aridi funeral, the date for which would be announced later.
