Parliament is expected Tuesday to be the theater of a political confrontation between the March 14 majority and March 8 minority over the electoral constituencies' law and related reforms.
The minority wants the house to tackle a bill on electoral constituencies as outlined by the Doha Agreement.
The majority, while adhering to the Doha Accord, wants reforms to the election law, which are still being considered by a parliamentary committee, tackled as one parcel along with the constituencies' law so that the two items would be adopted as one comprehensive law.
MP Robert Ghanem, head of the parliamentary administration and justice committee that is considering the reforms bill, is to propose postponing both issues for three weeks pending completion of the reforms bill.
Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun said on Monday the constituencies' law should be adopted "tomorrow."
However, MP Ahmed Fatfat, a member of the majority alliance, said no reforms no constituencies.
The daily An Nahar said a compromise has been worked out with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri that would eventually lead to postponing the whole issue until the reforms bill is ready so that both items would be adopted into one law effective as of the date of publishing in the official gazette. |
