Character Driven, Not Jungle Driven Life can be a jungle. In the work place others might blame us for their incompetence or shower us with a condescending icy shoulder. At times words or actions may have cut deeper than we even knew was possible.
Although it is possible to live life savagely by merely dishing out to others what we feel they deserve, a disciple is not to be a prime specimen of the survival of the fittest but the imprint of God's character in this dark world. We are not to merely react to others but as children of God we are to act toward others based upon who we are. God's actions gush forth from His character. God sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Matthew 5:45 Why? Because that is who the Father is as one who does not show favoritism. While we were ungodly, God sent his Son to die for us. Why? Because God is love. God acts deliberately out of His character; He does not merely react to us. The reason why we should love our enemies is "in order that you might become sons of your heavenly Father." Matthew 5:45 We are to love, not because we think that someone else is deserving of our favor, but because our lives are driven by the Father's character. If we are going to be children of the Father, then we must treat others like the Father treats them. Why should we extend kindness to a fellow employee who falsely blamed us for his mistakes? Why should we shower that woman with kindness who repeatedly gives us the cold shoulder? For the same reason why God showed His love to us while we were unlovable - because of His character. Children of God are to treat others based upon who they are, not upon what others have done to them. Barry Newton, |
