Lebanon and Syria are working jointly to settle a dispute that arose from the illegal extension of Syria's mobile phone network into Lebanese territory, according to Lebanese Telecommunications ministry.
A Telecommunications ministry statement issued Wednesday said that a joint Lebanese-Syrian committee is scheduled to hold its second meeting on May 8 in Beirut to resolve the problem.
It said discussions would focus on "settling the infringement of Syrian mobile companies on the Lebanese cellular field that has spread to most Lebanese territory."
The statement said the committee would also assess the results of a field examination of the situation on the common border.
In February, Telecommunications Minister Marwan Hamadeh ( Above picture) accused Syria of turning its relay stations located at the frontier toward Lebanon to allow people to use Syrian pre-paid mobile phone cards inside Lebanese territory.
He said that the network covers nearly 70 percent of Lebanese territory and this is considered a serious breach of the agreement between the two countries.
One of his prime concerns was that the practice would deprive Lebanon of the much needed income that it reaps from telecommunications, one of the country's most lucrative sectors.
After a cabinet meeting last Tuesday, the minister said Syrian officials have promised to solve the issue within 3 months.
