The international "Friends of Lebanon" group called for an immediate end to the violence and long-delayed presidential elections with no pre-conditions.
"We call for the immediate cessation of fighting, the withdrawal of gunmen from the streets, the unblocking of roads and the reopening of Beirut International Airport," the group said in a statement issued at the United Nations. The Friends of Lebanon groups 12 Western and Arab countries -- Britain, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Qatar -- as well as the heads of the U.N., Arab League and the Council of the European Union.(AFP) |
