France: Hizbullah's Military Victory Doesn't Mean Political Success

The pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Tuesday quoted French sources as saying the government in Paris believed that Hizbullah's military victory did not entail a political success. Hizbullah's military victory on the ground does not mean there is a political victory. There is no victor and no vanquished, they said. It's true that Hizbullah proved its military strength, "but this does not mean that Resolution 1559 as well Resolution 1701 has been abolished," the sources said. They also said Hizbullah's seizure of West Beirut could not "eliminate or freeze" the functioning of the international tribunal that would try ex-Premier Rafik Hariri's suspected assassins. They hailed the army for staying unified despite some "gaps" in the military's reaction to some events, including the burning of Future TV offices in Beirut's Raouche district. Army chief "Gen. Michel Suleiman was able to stay neutral to avoid a bloodbath," the sources told the daily. Meanwhile, French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned the latest violence and reiterated support for Premier Fouad Saniora's government. He also urged the return to the dialogue table in accordance with Arab League efforts to reach a settlement to the Lebanese crisis.
