Tension escalated in Lebanon as army troops deployed along disengagement lines between opposition and majority supporters in central mountains amidst clashes in the north that killed one person and wounded six.
An Arab League committee assigned to mediate a settlement to the Lebanon crisis was expected to arrive in Beirut on Wednesday as league chief Amr Moussa insisted on landing at Beirut airport that has been closed to aviation by the opposition's civil disobedience since May 7. Clashes raged between the opposition stronghold of Baal Mohsen and the pro-Majority district of Tabbaneh in the northern port city of Tripoli, escalating tension in the area. The overland border crossing to Syria at Masnaa in east Lebanon's Bekaa valley also came under fire from undetermined sources early in the day, which led majority supporters in the area to open fire sporadically from assault rifles. Meanwhile, MP Akram Shehayyeb of the Progressive Socialist Party said residents of the Aley region are cooperating with army patrols in maintaining law and order and deploying along disengagement lines separating them from opposition fighters. In east Lebanon's Barouk region, PSP supporters turned over to the army scores of Hizbullah fighters who were besieged and captured in overnight clashes. The pro-PSP defenders also seized 13 Hizbullah vehicles and turned them over to the army early Monday upon instructions from PSP leader Walid Jumblat. The PSP said the move was in response to a request by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who also heads the opposition AMAL movement. Meanwhile, Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea held talks with Premier Fouad Saniora at the latter's office in Beirut and told reporters the opposition would not achieve "political gains" from their military offensive. "We would not discuss any issue before the situation returns to normalcy," Geagea said. Berri also received U.S. Charge d'Affaires Michele Sison at his Beirut residence. The meeting came after a U.S. destroyer crossed the Suez Canal heading to the Mediterranean. |
