Italy's new Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa is to visit Italian U.N. peacekeeping troops in Lebanon "imminently," domestic news agency ANSA reported Sunday.
Russa has "asked military leaders to organise for me, as quickly as possible, a trip to Lebanon (...) to lend support to our soldiers and underline that they really are working for peace, every day," he was quoted as saying. The escalation in violence since Thursday "is not a source of fresh concern in the territory assigned to the Italian troops," Russa added. Italy has 2,500 troops attached to the 13,000-strong United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), deployed in southern Lebanon to keep the peace between Hezbollah fighters and Israel, after the war of summer 2006. Clashes since Thursday have largely been in the north, although the Lebanese army deployed across much of the country on Sunday. Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Friday that he was going to consult with military personnel on the ground amid a debate over a loosening of the peacekeeping force's rules of engagement.(AFP) |
