BEIRUT, May 10 (Reuters) - At least two mourners were killed on Saturday when a gunman fired on a funeral procession for a pro-government supporter in Beirut who had died in clashes with Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters, security sources said.
Six other people were wounded, two critically, in the incident at a cemetery near an area controlled by Shi'ite Muslim gunmen. The sources said the gunman was arrested by Lebanese soldiers.
Hezbollah sources said the gunman was a Shi'ite but he was not a member of any group, adding that he had confessed to the shooting to avenge an old dispute with pro-government followers.
Hezbollah fighters and allied Shi'ite gunmen took control of the Muslim sector of the Lebanese capital on Friday after routing pro-government Sunni gunmen.
The latest deaths brought the death toll to 24 in four days of fighting in Beirut and other areas. (Writing by Nadim Ladki; editing by Sami Aboudi) © Thomson Reuters 2008 All rights reserved |
