Labor Union leader Ghassan Ghoson on Thursday urged workers to bolster ranks for a general strike to demand a pay raise.
Ghoson, addressing a rally on May Day, said the general strike scheduled for next Wednesday, was directed against policies of majority Premier Fouad Saniora's government that aim at "impoverishing and starving the people." Ghoson, who heads the General Federation of Labor Unions, declared: "We are against the policies of this government … against its arbitrary taxes. We are against the government because it protects monopolies and does not combat the hiking prices." "Unity of the unions and interests of workers and the homeland are more important than any other affiliation," said Ghoson whose GFLU faces a corrective movement by pro majority unions. The GFLU's leadership was elected before withdrawal of Syria's forces from Lebanon in April 2005 and it groups mainly unions affiliated with pro-Syrian political parties. |
