The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon has denied accusations that the peacekeeping force is biased toward Israel. A statement issued by UNIFIL's office of Political and Civil Affairs stressed that the peacekeepers dealt with "all parties even-handedly."
"In the last few days there have been some articles and reports in the media which did not accurately represent the way in which UNIFIL operates and the nature of its relations with the Lebanese," the statement said. "UNIFIL feels it necessary to provide the relevant information so that the public may have a fuller understanding of UNIFIL and is not misled," it said. The statement was a clear response to accusations made by the pro-opposition daily As Safir on Thursday which questioned UNIFIL's role and intentions. The newspaper accused UNIFIL of ensuring the safety of Israel rather than south Lebanon. As Safir wrote that "such biased behavior is likely to have drastic repercussions on UNIFIL's relationship with southerners, who have long considered the peacekeepers as reliable friends rather than foes." UNIFIL's statement said the key element in the force's mandate "is for the peacekeepers to act in a fully impartial and objective manner." "The focus is on ensuring full respect for and to prevent violations of the relevant provisions of Resolution 1701, irrespective of who is the perpetrator," it said. "UNIFIL also acts in a completely transparent way and keeps U.N. headquarters and the Security Council fully and factually informed about all the developments on the ground and any violations of Resolution 1701." The statement stressed that UNIFIL's relationship with the Lebanese army "contributed to stabilizing the situation on the ground." The Lebanese army has "primary responsibility for security and law and order in the area," the statement said. While, UNIFIL, the statement said, "with its significant capability, is patrolling the area of operations, monitoring the cessation of the hostilities, and assisting the LAF (Lebanese Armed Forces)." |
