Ex-minister Wiam Wahab, a reputed ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime, warned Thursday against upgrading UNIFIL's powers in south Lebanon, saying that would change it into a force of spies for Israel.
Wahab, talking to reporters, said "let it be known to all that any amendment of UNSCR 1701 to widen the scope of UNIFIL's mission could topple the whole resolution." "Let it be known to all that this is a very sensitive issue that could change UNIFIL into a force of spies in south Lebanon gathering information for the sake of Israel and operating against the resistance." That, Wahab said, "could lead to toppling resolution 1701." He did not elaborate on the remark. UNIFIL has complained that unidentified gunmen intercepted one of its patrols in the southern sector of south Lebanon on March 30 and asked the Lebanese authorities to establish their identity and prevent further serious violations of UNSCR 1701. |
