Syria lashed back at UN overseer of the implementation of resolution 1559 Terej Roed-Larsen's report, regarding ties with Lebanon. A Syrian memorandum to UN chief Kofi Annan said that the issue of establishing embassies or not establishing them between Beirut and Damascus is a matter that falls within the jurisdiction of both countries,
and can be agreed on when the environment prevailing in relations between Lebanon and Syria allows such steps. The letter also dismissed Larsen's suggestions of uncertainty about the withdrawal of the Syrian intelligence apparatus from Lebanon.
US-Syria Assistant US Secretary of State for political affairs, Nicholas Burnz, said that the US and France are preparing to draft a new and harsher resolution against Syria. Speaking from Paris, Burnz added that the draft resolution calls upon Syria to fully implement all UN resolutions related to it. The declaration by the US official also underlined that President Bashar Assad's regime has to do whatever necessary to ensure Lebanon's independence and sovereignty. |
