Resigned Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh on Saturday criticized a U.S. call for the return of Palestinian refugees to a Palestinian state, rather than to Israel.
Salloukh, in a statement distributed by the state-run National News Agency (NNA), said Palestinian refugees should return to the areas that they deserted in 1948, when the state of Israel was created. Salloukh said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Welch "wants the Palestinians to return to a promised state in areas occupied in 1967." Such a pledge by Welch "torpedoes the legal-political-humanitarian right of Palestinian refugees to return to their basic lands … the majority of Palestinian refugees belong to 1948 areas," Salloukh said. |
