Assad Says Syria Getting Ready for War, Labels 'Short-Term' Disputes with Lebanon

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Damascus was getting ready for war with Israel, adding that he sees the possibility of warfare although there are no signs of it. Assad's remarks came during a Conference on Pan-Arab Thought Revival and Arab Destiny in Damascus. On Lebanon, Assad said that Syria "knows what is going on in Lebanon and it is not on an equal distance from all (factions)." "But we have acted in a very responsible way when we sent the invitation to Prime Minister Fouad Saniora to the Arab League," the Syrian president said. "We feel the United States is satisfied with the situation and does not wish to seek a solution to the Lebanon crisis," he added. "We don't believe in the existence of a long-term dispute with one (Lebanese) party," Assad said, adding that the row is a "short-term conflict."
