Families of Lebanese detainees in Syrian jails launched a sit-in in downtown Beirut Friday, demanding the formation of an international committee to establish their whereabouts.
Michel Sweidan, an ex-detainee, urged Premier Fouad Saniora's government to hold an extraordinary session to discuss one topic, that its asking the United Nations to form a committee entrusted with the mission of establishing the whereabouts of the detainees. Sweidan said he was "ready to disclose all the information about the number of detainees who were with me and had been liquidated." Ali Abu Dihen, another ex-detainee, also told reporters covering the event that "a number of Lebanese detainees were with me in the same detention place three years ago when I was set free." He urged Syrian President Bashar Assad to release the detainees "at once and open a new page of relations with Lebanon." The committee following up the issue of Lebanese detainees in Syrian jails called for conduction DNA tests to families of all detainees, to set the stage for a serious effort to establish their whereabouts. |
