A report claims Iranian boats engaged a US warship in the Persian Gulf 'in a taunting manner', echoing previous accusations against Tehran. Three small Iranian boats approached the USS Typhoon late Thursday, CNN television reported on Friday.

According to the report, at least one of the Iranian boats came 'within 200 yards' of the US Navy ship, claiming that the incident prompted 'the crew onboard the Typhoon to fire a warning flare'.

"The Iranians were maneuvering in a taunting manner," CNN claimed, citing an unnamed US official.

According to AP, however, a US Navy official has said that the Typhoon fired a flare and continued on its way northward without incident after the establishment of radio contact was unsuccessful.

The official added that the Iranian boats did not appear to have been armed.

Although the Iranian Foreign Ministry did not comment on the matter, an informed source in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) affirmed that there was no confrontation.

"The Iranian boats had approached the US warship in the Persian Gulf for a routine check," the official told Press TV.

In January, the US Navy and the Pentagon accused Iranian speedboats of 'harassing' US warships in the Strait of Hormuz and released video footage of what President George W. Bush called 'a provocative act' by Iran.

In their version of the incident, the Iranian speedboats had 'threatened' to 'blow them up'. Later, however, the Pentagon attempted to back away from its claims as evidence surfaced that the voice heard in the footage could not have possibly originated from the Iranian speedboats.

The Navy Times later published a report suggesting that the broadcast could have originated from an infamous radio prankster called the 'Filipino Monkey'.
