An ongoing major Israeli ground assault on Jabaliya refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip on Saturday have killed at least 31 Palestinians, about half of them civilians, raising the death toll to 74 in four days of Israeli raids. A baby and two teenagers were among the dead, and dozens of people were wounded. Witnesses said clashes erupted on Saturday when Palestinian gunmen spotted an Israeli force backed by helicopters that had entered the coastal territory.

The Jewish state said it was responding to cross-border rockets which killed an Israeli man in the border town of Sderot on Wednesday and wounded others in the major southern city of Ashkelon.

The United States urged Israel to "consider the consequences" of any action ahead of next week's visit by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Of the 31 killed on Saturday, 16 were civilians and the rest militants, according to hospital staff and the Islamist Hamas movement, which seized control of Gaza last June after routing the more secular forces of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Late Friday an activist of Islamic Jihad and a 17-year-old girl were killed in another air raid on Jabaliya, the biggest refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, hospital sources said.

A little earlier a militant of Hamas's military wing was killed in a similar raid while a two-year-old girl, Malak Karsarna, died after being wounded by a shell blast near Beit Hanun, the sources added.

The deaths brought to 6,208 the total number of people killed in Israeli-Palestinian violence since 2000, most of them Palestinians, according to an AFP count.
