Cyprus entered the Guinness Book of Records on Sunday with the longest bra chain, breaking the record held by Singapore.
Cypriot, Dutch and British organizers formed a 111 km-long chain, running along the pier of the harbor in Paphos on the southwest coast of the Mediterranean island, eclipsing a 60 km record which had been held by Singapore.
The stunt was part of a campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer and encourage more regular check-ups, said the organizers.
The chain consisted of nearly 115,000 bras and it took volunteers almost a year to collect the underwear and over eight hours to clip them together, which eventually led to forming over 200 lines of bras up and down the length of the Paphos pier.
Old bras, new bras, lacy bras, colored bras were flown in to Cyprus from people in all four corners of the globe, including Saint Lucia, Martinique, Canada, the United States, Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, Russia, Turkey, Iran and all 25 member states of the European Union, according to the organizers.
When the last bra was attached on Sunday afternoon, 111 pink balloons, the color of the breast cancer awareness emblem, were released.
A sum of 30,000 Cypriot pounds (66,000 U.S. dollars) has already been collected in the anti-breast cancer drive and organizers said that the figure was bound to increase by the end of the day.
Breast cancer kills about 400,000 women worldwide each year. Doctors say regular screening, particularly for women over 50, is vital for early detection crucial to survival rates.
