Prime Minister Fouad Saniora said Friday Lebanon did not invite any foreign warships to its territorial waters that are patrolled only by the Lebanese navy and U.N. peacekeeping vessels. Saniora made the remark in a brief address to Arab ambassadors summoned to his office following an announcement by the United States that it has assigned the guided missile destroyer USS Cole to a mission in the Mediterranean off the Lebanese coastline.

Saniora's declaration set the record that the U.S. navy vessel would not be cruising in Lebanese territorial waters, but rather in international waters of the Mediterranean.

"There are no U.S. warships in Lebanese territorial waters and we did not invite any destroyers from any side, we want clarifications from the U.S. charge d'affaires in Lebanon regarding assigning the destroyer Col," Saniora said.

He reiterated the government's adherence to the Arab initiative describing it as "the sound way out of the impasse by electing a president."

He warned against "some politics pursued by some (factions) to serve external greediness."

Saniora also denounced Israel's "persisting crimes in Gaza" and urged the international community to shoulder its responsibility regarding the situation in Palestine.
