Prime Minister Fouad Saniora said on Thursday Lebanon should be represented at the forthcoming Damascus summit by a "Maronite Christian President" among 22 Muslim Arab heads of state.
Saniora made the remark at a news conference in Paris after talks with Arab ambassadors to France. In answering a question as to whether he would represent Lebanon at the Damascus summit scheduled for March 29, Saniora said: "Lebanon has not received an invitation. The invitation should be addressed to the president. Lebanon should be represented at the summit by its president, this is a basic principle for the Arab structure," he said. Saniora noted that importance of Lebanon's pluralist system is to have "a Christian president represented in a meeting by 22 (Arab) states." Lebanon, according to the premier, "is the opposite of Israel … if we want to fight Israel we must adhere anew to Lebanon's rule of joint existence … and we should have a Maronite Christian President at the summit." Saniora described the Arab Initiative as a "serious" plan capable of finding a "real solution that satisfies all parties" to the ongoing political crisis. "The Arab initiative provides a solution to whoever is after a solution," he added. Saniora said "no one has an interest in a clash among the Lebanese." |
