Saniora: Lebanon Wants 'Good Relations' with All Countries

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Saniora has said Lebanon wanted "good relations" with all countries in the world, including Syria and Iran, but not with Israel, "our only enemy." Relations, however, must be based on mutual respect," Saniora told reporters in London Monday, the second leg a tour which includes France and Germany. Saniora on Monday wrapped up a two-day visit to Kuwait after talks with Kuwaiti officials that focused on the Lebanon situation. Saniora stressed that "it is not acceptable for Iran to view Lebanon as an arena for conflicts." He said that while Iran and Syria were "financially and militarily" supporting the Hizbullah-led opposition in Lebanon, the pro-government March 14 coalition was "mostly dependent on the support of the Lebanese people in addition to our regional and international friends." On recent clashes that took place in many neighborhoods of West Beirut over the past few days, Saniora said such fighting only serves Israel's interests. "The Lebanese people should not be dragged into war again," Saniora said. "We all saw what happened in the past and I believe nobody wants it to happen again," a reference to the 1975-90 Civil War.
