Suleiman: I will Support Consensus on Another Candidate

Army commander Gen. Michel Suleiman was quoted on Saturday as saying that he supports consensus on a different presidential candidate. If consensus is reached on another candidate, I will support his candidacy and will not obstruct it," the daily Al Balad quoted Suleiman as saying. Suleiman pointed out the difference between preserving security and safeguarding civil peace. "The political crisis is negatively affecting civil peace. Preserving and reinforcing this peace need a political decision, not a security one," Suleiman was quoted as saying, adding that this was the responsibility of the various political leaders and not the Lebanese army or Internal Security Forces. Suleiman said that the military has been carrying out a "political task" since the February 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri because of the deep political divisions. He said the "political task" involves protecting demonstrations launched by the feuding political camps – March 8 and March 14.
