Beirut - In Lebanon, 17 people have been arrested for their involvement in the killing of at least seven demonstrators in the capital Beirut last Sunday. Six of those held are civilians; the rest are soldiers.
Troops opened fire on the opposition protesters, for the most part supporters of the Shiite Amal and the pro-Syrian Hezbollah movements. The demonstrators were using burning tyres as barricades on roads, including the one to Beirut International Airport.
The opposition groups have for months been embroiled in a power struggle with Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's pro-Western government. |
