Lebanon's opposition buries its dead

Lebanon's opposition has buried its dead a day after violent clashes broke out between militants and the army in the capital Beirut. The eight militants killed were all members of the Shi'ite groups Amal and Hezbollah. The two groups decided to bury their dead separately to avoid a mass gathering that could further fuel tensions. Lebanon's most powerful faction and opposition leader Hezbollah is demanding to know who was responsible for the shootings. Amal leader and parliament speaker Nabih Berri and army chief Michel Suleiman agreed the military would conduct a "swift and serious investigation" into the killings. Rival leaders have agreed on Suleiman as a candidate for Lebanon's presidency, which has been vacant since November. But his election has been delayed by disputes over the make-up of the next government.
