eirut - Lebanon's Shiite Amal movement on Sunday called its followers to "immediately" evacuate Beirut streets after a member of the pro-Syrian group was shot an killed in clashes between the army and opposition followers protesting power cuts.
Ali Ahmed Hamzah was killed by a stray bullet when the Lebanese army tried to disperse around 50 protestors who had used burning tyres to block a road linking Beirut's Shiite southern suburbs with its eastern Christian neighbourhoods. The Shiite Amal movement, which is closely aligned to the Shiite Hezbollah movement which leads Lebanon's opposition, also called on the army to open an investigation into his death. Red Cross volunteers at the scene said at least four people were wounded, among them a soldier. The streets of the Lebanese capital were deserted and the Lebanese army set up checkpoints to prevent further clashes. |
