KUWAIT: Amid the firestorm of Lebanon's Friday bombing, Kuwait Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed Al-Sabah left for Cairo to attend an emergency meeting of the Arab League Foreign Ministers. He said upon departing, "This situation in Lebanon is highly volatile and serious." Noting, "It is vulnerable to anything which is a regrettable situation.
Friday's bombing, which left a top intelligence officer dead, is the latest in a three year series of bombings targeting anti-Syrian politicians. Lebanon remains without a president with the Arab League initiative backing the Commander of the Lebanese Army Michel Suleiman as president having failed. It was recently reported that Syria, which had signed on to the Arab initiative backing Suleiman, had instead begun a campaign backing former Cabinet minister Faris Boueiz for president. What we want to see is the election of Michel Suleiman. That is what the Arab Initiative called for," said FM Sheikh Mohamed, noting the Arab League's continued desire that the initiative occurs immediately. He furthered, after the election of the president then "there can be a national unity government". When asked if opposition groups are the cause of Lebanon's problems, FM Sheikh Mohamed answered, "We do not pour oil on the fire and I do not believe that assigning blame is in anyone's best interests. We want to be a part of the solution, not the problem," He said, "What we see is a complication to the issue which is very dangerous and opens the country to the interference of foreign elements. FM Sheikh Mohamed further noted, "I believe that all the factions in Lebanon value their state because they are the people of Lebanon." Kuwait Times asked if the resolution to Lebanon's problems will come from the people of Lebanon or foreign powers to which he replied hesitatingly, "That's what we will see." FM Sheikh Mohamed said the Cairo meeting will, "review the latest negotiations between the Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa with Lebanon and Syria to resolve the Lebanese problem." He stated, We will exhaust all efforts to bring about a unified Arab resolution." Adding, "There will not be any concessions with regards to Lebanon and its people. Gaza's continued plight against the Israeli siege and military incursions into the strip will also be on the agenda in Cairo. "We will talk about Gaza and the human suffering of the Palestinian people and the Israeli aggression," said FM Sheikh Mohamed. |
