BEIRUT: Democratic Gathering MP Akram Chehayeb urged Lebanese diva Fairuz on Friday not to perform in Damascus. "Don't sing to Lebanon's headsmen," the fiercely anti-Syrian MP said in a statement. Twenty years after she last performed in Syria, Fairuz - the greatest female Arab singer since Egypt's Umm Kalsum - will take to the stage on January 28 to perform her latest theatrical production, "Sah al-Nom (Good Morning)".
Those who love Lebanon don't sing before its jailers," Chehayeb added. "Lebanon is imprisoned and stripped of its powers," he said, adding that the international community has acknowledged that Syrian President Bashar Assad regime is hindering the presidential election so that the Lebanese "will not be able to build a strong nation." Damascus has been named the cultural capital of the Arab world for 2008, hosting a year-long series of theatrical and musical events, along with talks by renowned intellectuals. American linguist and leftist intellectual Noam Chomsky, Czech writer Milan Kundera and Fairuz are among the personalities coming to Syria as Damascus assumes the cultural mantle from Algiers.
