United Nations (PTI): UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the roadside bombing that targetted two Irish UN peacekeepers as well as rocket firing into northern Israel from Lebanon. "If the rockets were launched from Lebanese territory, as is likely, the incident would constitute a serious violation of Security Council resolution," Ban said, referring to the resolution that ended Israel's war against Hizbollah in August 2006 and enhanced the UN Interim Force in Lebanon. UNIFIL is continuing its investigation of the Jan 8 attack to determine the launch site of the rockets that hit the town of Shlomi in northern Israel, causing minor damage to a house. UN officials say that neither UNIFIL nor the Israeli Defence Forces could detect the rockets when they were fired. Two Irish military officers serving with UNIFIL were wounded in Tuesday's roadside bombing which damaged their vehicle on the coastal highway near Sidon, UNIFIL said. |
