(IHC News Analysis, 08 January 2008) Two Katyusha rockets struck northern Israel early Tuesday morning, 08 January 2008, one of which hit a home and the other a lamppost. This was the second incident of its kind since the Second Lebanon War. At the time of this report it was unclear if the Iranian-backed Hizbullah violated the August 2006 cease-fire agreement or if a separate terror organization perpetrated the attack. Last June, two Katyushas were fired at Israel but a Sunni group claimed responsibility for that attack.

On Monday Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned it was, “ready for any attack or foolish adventure that the Zionist enemy initiates.”

The fact he made the statement just prior to the latest barrage suggests there was a connection with the attack, even if Hizbullah itself did not perpetrate it.

Meanwhile, during a meeting for the Council for Peace and Security in Tel Aviv that same day, Israel Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Hizbullah has acquired technically advanced weapons since the summer of 2006 and that the border between Syria and Lebanon remains open to smuggling of military equipment.

Israeli security officials also confirmed to The New York Times that a Katyusha rocket launched from Gaza, which hit the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon last Thursday, was Iranian-made.

Reflecting on the growing Iranian/Hamas/Hizbullah ties, one official said the Katyusha was “not like something we’ve seen before” coming out of Gaza.

According to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot, it entered Gaza across the Egyptian border.
