Ali Larijani, the representative of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Iran's Supreme National Security Council, who has been in Syria on a visit since January 3, has declared Iran's support for the Arab foreign ministers' council plan for resolving the Lebanon crisis.
Under the plan, Lebanese military commander Michel Sleiman will become president, and a unity government will be set up, in which the president will be able to cast deciding votes. Lebanese parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri welcomed the solution, calling it an historic step. During his tour of Syria, Larijani met with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and the two stressed the need to strengthen relations and ongoing consultations between their countries in light of "the particularly sensitive conditions in the region." Larijani met also with Hamas leader Khaled Mash'al and Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shelah, and with representatives from Hizbullah and Amal. |
