Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has made an unannounced trip to Lebanon, holding talks with his counterpart there, Fouad Siniora.
The visit comes as Lebanon continues to function without a president. The pro-Western government and Hezbollah-led opposition have failed to reach a deal to elect a successor to Emile Lahoud.
Zapatero met some of Spain's 1,100 troops, who form part of the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon.
Last June, a car bomb killed six members of UNIFIL's Spanish battalion. Madrid suspects it was the work of al Qaeda-inspired militants.
UNIFIL has grown to 13,500 soldiers and naval personnel from 27 countries under a UN Security Council resolution.
The measure halted the war in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah. |
