Iran said on Sunday a Middle East conference organized by the United States would result in an erosion of Palestinian rights, accusing Washington of lack of credibility as an objective mediator.
"The so-called conference... is of no benefit to the Palestinian people and has the aim of supporting the occupying Zionists," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a speech, quoted by the official IRNA news agency. Israeli and Palestinian leaders are to meet in Annapolis outside Washington this week in a bid to kick-start negotiations for a Palestinian state living in peace with Israel, Iran's arch regional enemy which it does not recognize. "The organizers of this conference are Americans and past experience tells us that they cannot be objective and credible mediators and they are providing all out support for the Zionist regime," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said, making a reference to Israel. "The end result of all of these conferences leads to a further erosion of Palestinian rights," he told a news conference. More than a dozen Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and possibly Syria, are to send cabinet ministers. But Ahmadinejad lashed out at regional states for taking part in the conference. "I regret that certain countries around us are taking part in this conference which has no purpose, especially as the host of this conference is the enemy of the Palestinian people. "Participation in this conference is a sign of a lack of political intelligence. "History will not look positively on the name of those who participate in this conference and help the Zionist regime," he added. Israel was an ally of the imperial regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, developing close military and economic ties with Iran until his overthrow in the Islamic revolution of 1979. Ahmadinejad has repeatedly courted controversy by predicting Israel is doomed to disappear, most notoriously calling in 2005 for the Jewish state to be "wiped off the map". |
